Hello, my name is Mushy. My animal id is #17682. I am a desexed female tortoiseshell cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 05-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Original Location: 11435
Mushy 17682 is at risk due to being diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other cats. She would do well with an experienced pet owner.

Basic Information:: Mushy is a 4 year old, DSH female who was not spayed prior to coming into the shelter. She has no known health issues or injuries, and has not seen a vet recently. She was found as a stray as a young kitten, and had been in the home for about 4 years. She was surrendered due to personal issues in the family.
Previously lived with:: In home with owner, 4 children
How is this cat around strangers?: Mushy is shy for a little bit when meeting new people. She typically keeps to herself but will come around if she wants to.
How is this cat around children?: Mushy has not spent time around young children before. The youngest child in the home is 11, and Mushy was respectful and relaxed around him.
How is this cat around other cats?: Mushy has lived with one other male cat in the home and was tolerant living with him.
How is this cat around dogs?: Mushy has not spent time around dogs.
Behavior Notes: Mushy’s owner has not bathed her or trimmed her nails, but he has brushed her which she tolerates for short periods of time. Mushy will allow her owner to pick her up and hold her, but putting her in the carrier can sometimes be a struggle.

For a New Family to Know: Mushy is described as being friendly, mellow and quiet. She will follow her family around when they are home and likes to play with balls, string and wand toys, and has been an indoor cat. She sleeps anywhere in the home, and eats both wet and dry food. She is litter box trained using an uncovered box with crystal litter. She scratches on fabrics and carpet in the home.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 01/05/18 Subjective: Growling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/07/18 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body, eyes wide. She tolerates petting along her head and body while turning her head slowly to smell the bear-claw, face tense. Curious but unsure. Has potential to warm up. 01/08/18 Crouched on top of kuranda bed, body tense and eyes alert. She starts sniffing the air when I open the treat bag and jumps down to eat the ones I place on the floor. Leans away and flattens her ears when touched, turns head around to watch my hand and begins to vocalize loudly. I click and reward each time she comes forward or smells my hand. Need some more time to adjust. 01/09/18 Lying in litterbox, body slightly tense and ears forward. Eyes are alert. She sits up as the cage door opens and looks around the room. Steps forward for treats. She then allows petting along her head and body, raising her tail as my hand passes along her back. Allows further petting while leaning in and coming forward, tail raised and quivering. Beginning to warm up – did great today! 01/10/18 Sitting in litterbox, ears forward and eyes alert. She stands up as I reach towards her and head-butts my hand gently. Steps forward with continued petting, leaning in as tail raises and then curls around body. Steps right to front of kennel to allow further petting. Very sweet, a bit tenser today. Begins to drool. She leans against my arm every time I try to close the cage door. Doing well! Ate all treats given. 01/11/18 Lying in litterbox with a neutral body, ears forward and eyes alert. She begins stands up and vocalizes as the cage door opens. She steps forward and head-butts my hand in greeting, then leans in and raises her tail. Allows all petting while purring. Drools every time I begin to pet her. Very affectionate – doing great! Ok to take off of socialization list.

Reaction to assessor:: Mushy was lying down by the back, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mushy makes eye contact with the assessor and blinks softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mushy becomes alert and focuses on movement in the room.
Reaction to touch:: Mushy sniffs the assessor’s hand and was hesitant of touch, but she accepts petting and was a bit tense. She slowly starts to warm up; she leans in for cheek rubs and slowly lifts her rear, but continues to focus on her surroundings.
