07/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Aggressive, would growl and hiss Behavior toward children: Growls Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Recent history of biting and scratching owner Litter box training: Uncovered litter box Energy level/descriptors: Medium activity level MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing at front of cage; swatting, strongly resists restraint; very limited exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/20/17 – Laying at front, soft body but eyes dilated, alert. Lay in place, ate offered treats. Sniffed hand and allowed a few pets while lip licking, then started hissing and repeatedly swatting assess-a-hand. Sprayed feliway. 7/23/17 – Resting towards front, soft body, eyes a little dilated. Stood when spoken to, came to the front and sniffed hand through the bars. After a moment, went to other kennel and lay down. Meowed when spoken to, eyes dilated, some lip licking. Stood when door opened, started cheek-rubbing cage furnishings. Hissed and moved away from attempted touch, but didn’t aggress further. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Munchkin lays at the front of the cage, looking around with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Munchkin continues to look around. Reaction to cage door opening: Munchkin stays at the front, but becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Munchkin initially leans and arches into the stroke, but then begins to hiss and walks away. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent, Bold POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Pet-induced aggression Initially Munchkin solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to hiss at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Munchkin becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Munchkin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only
