03/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Fearful and will stay hidden Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Scratch history Litter box training: Will urinate outside when he’s upset Energy level/descriptors: Low activity level Other notes: Doesn’t like being held and will display distance increasing behaviors. Used a carpet scratching post. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous, allowed all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/08/17 Trying hard to be invisible at the back of the cage. Very quiet, seems to be drooling some; possibly feigning sleep or else just not feeling well at all. Some lip licking. Allowed petting all over. 03/09/17 Curled up and held as tightly as he can hold himself at rear wall of kennel, facing away from the front. Allows some petting but is uncomfortable with touching. Seems to be either shut down (and/)or is sick. Seems dull and depressed, doesn’t appear to have eaten much. Is being treated for conjunctivitis, eyes are almost always closed. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Muffin crouched in the back of the kennel with his tail curled up at his side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Muffin hisses, lip licks and arches his back. Reaction to cage door opening: Muffin continues to hiss, the hair on his back rises and his tail starts to thrash. Reaction to touch: Muffin yowls and displays distance increasing behavior whenever the assessor tries to make contact. He seems really uncomfortable and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Muffin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner- Muffin is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. He may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
