MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – hissing, striking, growling, was able to place in cat den first, and then transfer to cat net ENRICHMENT: 6/27/17: At the front on approach, soft eyes and body, looking around. Started rubbing against the bars and meowing when spoken to. Stayed at the front when door opened, leaned and arched into pets, purred loudly. Very curious about room activity, but easily redirected with treats and affection. Really sweet! EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Mousey was lying down inside his cat den with his head was looking out through the opening. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mousey focuses on the assessor with dilated eyes at first, but his eyes softens slightly after. Reaction to cage door opening: Mousey becomes alert and starts to whine, grumbling a bit. Reaction to touch: Mousey focuses on the assessor’s hand, but sticks his body out of the den to sniff the assessor’s hand. He appears cautious and will focus his attention on movement in the room, and will continue to sniff the assessor’s hand after. With some coaxing, he pushes against the assessor’s hand and places his head below the hand to be petted. He warms up with gentle petting, leaning in for cheek rubs, but will grumble and look around the room, meowing softly with any sudden noise or movement. With more coaxing, he approaches the front and lies down next to the assessor, still cautious of the environment. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish in shelter environment, Social, Affectionate
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Mousey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Although he did well with children in his previous home, because of his stress levels in the care center we also recommend any future home with children conduct a thorough interaction.
