***SAFE 10/27/17*** SECOND CHANCE TONIGHT FOR DIABETIC MOTTO!! MOTTO IS A SHY 14 YR OLD WHO WAS DUMPED WITH SIBLING, RUNT (NOT LISTED) FOR “ALLERGIES”. Motto is social with a gentle approach. He is diabetic and will need someone to give him the care he needs. Please consider giving this senior boy a retirement home. And take a look at his 14 yr old sibling too! MUST RESERVE BY NOON.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 17-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health – allergies.
Motto is at risk for diabetic condition.
Motto 9969 is at risk for his medical condition (diabetes mellitus). Behaviorally, he has been social and interactive with a slow, gentle approach. He increases distance when uncomfortable. We recommend an adult-only home.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 14 YO (Based on owner hx) Microchip noted on Intake? History : owner surrender. hx of diabetes, owner brought in Lantus insulin and 3 insulin syringes BG: 461 (administered 1.5units using U-100 syringes; 13.7lb (6.2kg) x 0.25units = 1.5units Subjective: Aggressive, needed net for handling. Growling, hissing and lunging before, during and after examination Observed Behavior – aggressive Objective BCS: 6/9 limited exam d/t behavior EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: not done PLN: not done H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MC MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: 14 YO MC DLH 1. diabetic (confirmed on BG – 461) 2. aggressive Prognosis: good to poor with treatment Plan: 1. gave 1.5 units today SURGERY not needed
Hx: owner surrendered; diagnosed with diabetes by private vet and started on lantus insulin; due to behavior, they were unable to give insulin this morning S/O -BAR; alternates between rubbing on cage and growling/lunging when approached -good appetite -no nasal discharge or sneezing -OU: open and clear -mild muscle wasting, healthy hair coat A Diabetes Aggressive P Concern for ability to administer insulin due to behavior in the shelter Will focus on dietary management to try to manage DM-meal feed with canned food twice daily only Administer 1U lantus insulin BID if possible Rec’d immediate placement with foster or NH to see if behavior improves out of shelter environment

Upon intake Motto did not allow any handling or being collared. He was hissing, swatting and biting the carrier. No handling was performed to reduce stress.

Basic Information:: Motto is a 14 year old cat who came in with his sister Runt and were gotten from a friend. They were kept in the same home for 14 years unfortunately due to severe allergies they were unable to be kept. Motto was last taken to the vet a year and a half ago and was diagnosed as diabetic.
Previously lived with:: 2 adults, 1 cat
How is this cat around strangers?: Around strangers Motto is described as friendly but doesn’t play with them. When in an unfamiliar environment he is described as reactive and will hiss and swat.
How is this cat around children?: Around children he is described as usually tolerant but does not play.
How is this cat around other cats?: He has been socialized with his sibling cat and in known to be reactive and will swat and hiss on a daily basis.
How is this cat around dogs?: He has never been socialized with dogs so behavior is unknown.
Behavior Notes: Motto is known to meow for attention or when he is in a unfamiliar environment and will sleep during car rides. He isn’t bothered with being given a bath, having his nails trimmed, being brushed, being picked up and held or being placed in a carrier.
Bite history:: Motto has no known bite histories.

Medical Notes: Motto has been diagnosed as diabetic and was prescribed insulin shots.
For a New Family to Know: Motto was described as friendly, affectionate, mellow, confident, independent and shy. Motto does not use a litter box, he uses the bathroom in the toilet bowl. He will follow you around when home with you, enjoys playing with strings and catnip toys and has been kept indoors only. He prefers to sleep on his cat tower, ate friskies wet food 2 times a day and likes a scratching post made of rough rope or cardboard.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Motto was brought in with limited information on their behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment. Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults Behavior toward strangers: Around strangers Motto is described as friendly but doesn’t play with them. When in an unfamiliar environment he is described as reactive and will hiss and swat.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Resting on bedding towards back, soft eyes and body. Came forward for treats, then moved back and lay down again. Sat up when door opened, initially distracted by more treats, then leaned into pets and purred.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Motto remained neutral, lying down with head up by the front of the cage.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Motto stress meowed when softly spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Motto seemed interested, engaged the front with tail up, eyes dilated, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Motto slowly approached and sniffed the assessor’s hand then briefly accepted a touch while leaning into the petting. However, he seemed conflicted then increased distance, he hissed and pawed at the assessor’s hand to stop the interaction.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Motto may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
