05/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Morris was brought in with limited information on his behavioral tendencies in his previous home. His owner stated he lived in the bathroom almost all his life, but they did not mention why he was confined to one room. He did not have litter box issues until he developed crystals. He was reported to not like being petted often and will paw at the owner’s hand to leave him alone. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Hissing and growling in cage, does not like to be handle, hissing and growling during examination. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Morris was lying down by the back, neutral. Reaction when softly spoken to: Morris slowly approaches the front and sniffs around. Reaction to cage door opening: Morris becomes alert, but focuses more on movement in the room. Reaction to touch: Morris sniffs the assessor’s hand and rubs his head against it when coaxed. He seems to appreciate attention and will rub his body against the assessor. He accepts soft petting on his head, but tenses up and flips his head back to focus on the hand when stroked along his back, tail swaying side to side. He seems to dislike his back being touched, but will continue to rub his cheeks and nudge the assessor’s hand when pet on his head. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Sweet, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Overstimulation – Morris is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Morris becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, Adult Only Home – Morris solicits attention, but may be uncomfortable when touched on certain areas of his body. He may need time to warm up to his new home as well. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
