MO is an owner surrender – she is nervous but allowed handling. Needs a furever home.

Hello, my name is Mo. My animal id is #12069. I am a desexed female tortoiseshell kitten at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 08-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as poor choice – too many animals already.
Mo is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). She displays fearful behavior in the care center and takes a bit of time to acclimate after a couple of days. Pet owners with Experience in how to interact and socialize this behavior would be best suitable for Mo.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 5 months Microchip noted on Intake? negative History : o/s Subjective: BARH Observed Behavior -Nervous and will flee but did not resist handling. Liked being held. Did well for all medical procedures. Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = wnl R = eupneic BCS 4/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: clean adult dentition, no oral lesions noted PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: FI, no MGTs, no vulvar d/c MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Apparently healthy Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC Prognosis: Excellent SURGERY: ok to schedule for surgery

Mo allowed for handling but did try to flee after sitting on the table for a few minutes.

Is this cat having litter box issues?: No
Basic Information:: Mo was born as an accidental stray litter in the finders basement. They have been indoor/outdoor kittens, and not a lot of interaction has been done between litter and family. Mo is a 5 month old, torite marking DSH female. She was not spayed prior to coming into the shelter, and has not seen a vet recently.
Previously lived with:: Indoor/Outdoor
How is this cat around strangers?: Mo is the most approachable of the three kittens in her litter. She is shy and independent, but has allowed her owner to pet her and pick her up when needed.
How is this cat around children?: Mo has not spent time around children
How is this cat around other cats?: Mo has lived with her litter mates and two adult cats. She was curious and playful with the elders, but they were not interested in interacting with her. They all tolerated each other.
How is this cat around dogs?: Mo has not spent time around dogs.
Behavior Notes: Mo’s owner has never bathed, groomed, or trimmed her nails. She will allow her owner to pick her up and handle her without a struggle.

For a New Family to Know: Mo is described as being a little shy, but friendly and playful. She will follow the family around when they are home and will seek attention. She has been an free choice cat, and eats both wet and dry food. She is mostly litter box trained using an uncovered box with clumping litter.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Nervous and will flee but did not resist handling. Liked being held. Did well for all medical procedures.
Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:: Mo was lying down flat in her litter box with her eyes focused on the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mo remains still and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mo lip licks and tenses up.
Reaction to touch:: Mo closes her eyes, curls up tight and shrinks her body when the assessor approaches. Her body feels tense when touched but she slowly starts to warm up and appreciate attention. After a few minutes of petting she leans in when rubbed on her cheek then rises up out of the litter box and gives head butts.

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Kitten socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Mo is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mo may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
