02/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mishu was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cat hiding under, cage rearranged, no change, recently cleaned, other Reaction to assessor: Mishu was tense and crouched over his blanket at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mishu shifts his weight, leans away and keeps his eyes fixated on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Mishu shifts away to the other side of the double kennel. Reaction to touch: Mishu lowers his body, lip licks and starts to growl when the assessor extends his hand out. He displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any contact. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/19/17 In a single cage, too small for his ample frame; Moved to a large space at back of room, where it should be quieter for him to adjust to this environment. He’s a fearful cat who’s been bounced around a lot of the last few weeks, apparently. 02/21/17 Lying at back of cage, pressed against rear wall, alert, head up, observing my movements. Doesn’t move when I open cage door, but when I slowly extend my hand to him he growls and moves to the other side of his kennel, not receptive to being touched. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tries to flee, hissing–very scared ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful- Mishu has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner- Mishu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
