05/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mint was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious tries to bite. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Mint was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel with her head lowered. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mint keeps her tail wrapped up around her body and she watches the assessor’s movements with wide, dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Mint lip licks and his eyes dart around. Reaction to touch: Mint sits up and starts to growl with her ears flattened. She hisses and leans back when the assessor attempts to pet her then quickly shifts away to the other side of the double kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Mint has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Mint is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
