10/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mint was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He remained by the front of his carrier upon intake with his paws tucked underneath his body. When the counselor attempted to pet him with a slow approach, he hissed and retreated to the back of the carrier. He was very nervous during his initial medical exam and displayed distance-increasing behaviors. Reaction to assessor: Mint was by the back of his kennel and had a neutral body posture. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mint looks at the assessor briefly and then averts his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Mint becomes stiff and alert, slowly rising up to sit up. Reaction to touch: Mint shifts away to avoid contact and focuses on the assessor’s hand with his ears tilted sideways. He doesn’t allow touch; he will hiss and shift away each time petting was attempted. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Mint is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
