ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/03/18 Lying in back of kennel with a flat, tense body. Tolerates petting along head and body while remaining very still and looking around the room. Needs more time to adjust. 01/07/18 Lying in back of kennel with a flat, tense body. She makes eye contact when spoken to, eyes wide, and then licks her lips. She backs away when I place treats next to her and tolerates touch briefly along the head before retreating quickly through her portal, tail and body low. Nervous, needs more time to adjust. 01/08/18 Crouched in back of kennel, body tense and tail wrapped around feet. She turns her head towards her portal as I reach towards her, eyes wide, then pauses when I place a treat by her. She comes forward to eat it, so I attempt clicker training, but she becomes too focused on me to eat anymore or engage further. Body is low and stiff, eyes are wide. Ears tilted. She eats the rest of the treats after I’ve closed the kennel door. Needs some more time to adjust. 01/09/18 Lying in litterbox with a low, tense body. She makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks around the room. Ears are forward. She tenses as the cage door opens and leans away from my hand when I reach towards her, ears flattening. Tail wraps around body. She eats a couple of the treats that I place down in front of her, then becomes focused on me. Tolerates petting while remaining still and tense. Needs more time to adjust. She finishes up the treats as soon as I close the kennel door.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Minnie tense, wary of her surroundings and pressed against the back wall of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Minnie makes eye contact with the assessor, lip licks and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Minnie curls her body up and watches the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to touch:: Minnie’s ears bend flat and she looks around the kennel frantically when the assessor extends his hand out. She flinches slightly when touched, but she tolerates gentle petting with a slow approach. After a few soft passes along her body she rises up and shifts away to the other side of the kennel.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Minnie has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Minnie tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
