Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mininu was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was very stressed during intake and hissed and swatted at the counselor. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Used a net due to striking, but easy to handle in net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/25/17 Seems pretty stressed out, hunched over facing the back wall. Flinches when the door opens. Ears pin back, arches back, hair on back pilo-erects. Displays distance increasing behaviors and was not open to interacting. 03/26/17 Pressed by the back wall, stiff and alert. Has an unhappy neighbor below. Will charge and swat as cage door opens, and then hunches up, lip licking. Does not appear to relax when coaxed. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Mininu becomes stiff and alert upon approach and hisses. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mininu hisses again and looks around with wide and dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Mininu hunches up and begins to growl loudly. Reaction to touch: Mininu looks around, seeming to want to escape. He hisses and does not allow contact, swatting the assessor’s hand when touch is attempted. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Mininu has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behaviors with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Mininu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
