Safe - 12-2-2017 Staten Island
SAFE 12/2/17- MiMi was brought to us because she did not seem to like her family. Her owner stated Mimi was not nice to her and didn’t care much for the children that would visit the home. She needs a patient foster. She hisses when I first approach her kennel but comes over with a soft meow.

KNOWN HISTORY: Mimi is a 3 year old female that has no previous or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Mimi for almost 3 years but had to surrender due to the animal swatting and trying to bite the owner. The owner also mentioned that Mimi does not socialize with children (Mimi lived with children ages 5,9 and 11).
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: friendly
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Mimi was sitting in the back of the kennel and did not come to the front but remained neutral.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Mimi did not come to the front but looked at me and was calm and relaxed. Mimi was slightly tense at first then came a little closer to the front to face me, slowly blinked, and softly purred.
Reaction to cage door opening: Mimi remained motionless and did not respond as I was opening the door then lifted up her head, curious of her surroundings.
Reaction to touch: Mimi appreciates petting, leans into petting, and lightly moved her head towards my hand to politely ask to be pet even more after I stopped.
Reaction to being picked up: Mimi becomes tense and briefly allowed handling then went back into her kennel. Once back in her kennel she rubbed her face against the surface, leaned into petting, and lightly purred.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back
Mellow
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Shy
Calm
Sweet
Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful
Uncomfortable with pick up
Potential challenges comments: Mimi has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
Mimi did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS: No young children
Recommendations comments: Mimi interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but she has a tendency to avoid socializing with children, hides when children or strangers are in the home and has been reported hissing/growling at them. Her behavior remains suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for experienced cat parents, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Mimi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
