MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Needed to use a net for examination, was striking and trying to bite EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Milo was inside a den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Milo does not respond and ignores the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Milo becomes alert, but remains unmoving inside of the den. Reaction to touch: Milo begins to sniffle and slowly shifts her body away from contact. She hisses and retreats further into her den, trying to hide. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Milo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult only home – Milo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
– Home with no other cats – Milo’s previous owner reports she does not get along with the other cats in her home. There were no additional details or context of the behaviors displayed, but we recommend Milo goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
