ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/07/18 Crouched in back of kennel, tail wrapped around feet and body tense. He tolerates petting initially while tilting his ears and shifting his weight. He turns his head to smell my hand and begins to raise his rear into the air when my hand passes along his back, then begins to raise his tail with successive pet. Curious but unsure – beginning to warm up! 01/08/18 Hunched in back of kennel, body low and tense. Makes eye contact as cage door opens and moves over to portal as if to retreats, body and tail low. He pauses when I open the treat bag and steps forward for treats. Eats all treats given. He flinches when touched initially, then head-butts the portal wall while retreating with a raised tail. Conflicted. Comes back forward when called and begins to lean in and raise tail when pet along the head and body. Steps forward and then retreats again when someone new enters the room. Skittish and focused on environment. Sweet once interacted with. Has potential to warm up. Did well today. 01/09/18 Low body and tail, ears forward. Steps forward to sniff the air then steps back. Curious but unsure. I clicker train, click and rewarding each time he steps forward to sniff my hand or allows petting. He eats the remainder of the treats from my hand and I begin to pet him along his head and body. He is tense for the first few moments, but then begins to raise his tail when as my hand passes along his back. Leans in and steps forward to sniff my nose. Timid and shy, beginning to warm up. Focused on environment. Doing better! 01/10/18 Sitting upright in center of kennel, body and face tense and tail curled around him. He raises his rear as I approach, then drops back down and licks his lips. Conflicted. He retreats through his portal as the cage door opens, then pokes his head out when called and steps back through. He steps forward to give my hand a gentle head-butt and walks away to scent mark his kuranda bed. Allows petting along his head and body, leaning in cautiously, then gaining confidence and stepping forward with his tail raised. Very food motivated. Showing improvement daily – did well today!

He does not vocalize or display any distance-increasing behavior, and will look at the assessor with soft eyes while lip licking. He appears nervous and unsure.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Milo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Milo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
