KNOWN HISTORY:: Mike was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/20/18 Recoils from touch, tries to flee, cries out
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/21/18 Hunched in back corner of kennel, body and face tense. Makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks away. He tolerates petting with the bear-claw along his head briefly while flinching and hissing, eyes opening wide. I pulled the claw away and left him alone – needs time to adjust. Wants to avoid contact. 02/22/18 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. Tolerates petting while remaining very still and beginning to growl, ears flattening. Limited interaction due to stress. Needs time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Mike was crouched and hiding underneath his kuranda bed, with his tail wrapped around his body.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mike low growls and slowly turns his head away.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mike’s tail thrashes and he moves towards the back of the kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Mike arches his back and starts to hiss when the assessor extends his hand out. He flinches when touched, but tolerates slow, gentle pets along his body. He grumbles and keeps his eyes hyper focused on the assessor’s hand when pet along his back.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Mike has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Please note that Mike is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. Mike tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
