09/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Miguel was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Quiet, a little timid, but allows exam/treatment with minimal restraint. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Miguel was curled up and hiding in the back of the cubby. Reaction when softly spoken to: Miguel lifts his head up, slow blinks and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Miguel is tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Miguel shrinks his body, his ears bend flat and he turns away when the assessor extends his hand out. He flinches slightly, but tolerates petting with a slow approach and lip licks throughout the interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Miguel has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Miguel tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
