Mickey is a six month old neutered brown tabby. He was surrendered by his owner due to conflict with the two year old child in the home. Owner stated Mickey is very rough when playing and will often scratch and nip at the child. Mickey was a gift from a family member and was with his owner since he was a few weeks old.
Mickey has lived with two adults and a two year old in the home. Mickey is described as friendly towards visitors in the home; he will greet them and rub on their legs. He will engage in somewhat rough play with the children and adults. Owner describes Mickey’s play behavior as rough due to him scratching and becoming over aroused and nipping. He has not broken skin within the last ten days. Mickey has not been around cats or dogs.
Mickey is litterbox trained and uses an open litterbox and clumping litter. Mickey often scratches during play. Mickey is relaxed during car rides and owner stated he will not make a sound. Mickey was not bathed by his previous owner. Mickey will struggle and nip when his nails are trimmed, owner stated will try to hide. Mickey tolerates being picked up and held; owner stated it depends on the person. Mickey seemed to bond with one person most in his previous home and will follow them around the home. Mickey will struggle when placed in a carrier; owner stated if food is placed inside the carrier he will walk in.
Mickey has a high activity level and loves to run and play around the home. Owner stated he loves to play with wand toys, stuffed toys and balls. He will bite and kick around with the stuffed toys and balls. Mickey has been kept only indoors. He eats dry food Purina brand and is fed 3-4 times a day.
Upon intake Mickey had a tense body and had his head facing the back of the carrier. When counselor approached he slowly turned his head and started to pant. He was receptive to petting and after a few minutes walked out the carrier. Mickey was collared and photographed. He had a tense body and dilated pupils. When presented with the carrier he walked right in. Mickey allowed all handling during intake.
Tense and wary on approach, hisses a little and is hesitant about being touched, focuses intently on my hands. Starts playing immediately with a small, catnip-infused plush toy I give him, and is interested in a feather on a pipe cleaner I offer. Needs time to adjust to this environment and work with appropriate play. Will spend more time with him this afternoon. Sprayed Feliway and left some treats.
A little more at ease on checking back, room was loud this morning. He definitely wants to play with hands, could use so work on appropriate play; previous home perhaps didn’t work on that, it seem, and/or the 2yo child in the home was likely playing with Mickey as many 2yo kids would, too much grabbing. Really handsome, mischievous little face, looks much younger than his 2y. Will need lots of mental and physical stimuation in his new home. Will try to get to the interaction room later today and/or in the early a.m. Also: I added a small wand toy to his kennel card packet to use to engage him.
Took to the interaction room this a.m. for play time. Fussed a bit when I took him from his kennel, but was otherwise easy to move to the room. Was somewhat wary in the room, wanted to stay by my side; rubbed against my legs, sat on a chair near me. Wasn’t too interested in play, was really focused on surroundings and all the sights and sounds and smells of the adoptions room and the main lobby, areas he can see from the room (which could be a little overwhelming after being in a holding room). I think he’ll be more relaxed and playful in the room tomorrow a.m., when it’s more familiar to him. He remained social and friendly with me throughout, allowed all handling, purred at times when being pet. Easy to return to his kennel. Gave some treats. Doing well. Update: Moved to adoptions. He’s a little nervous with this change, will give extra attention today. Sprayed Feliway and offered some treats.
