MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
03/30/18
Observed Behavior -Overall friendly
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
03/31/18
Curled up in the litter box. She shrinks her body when the cubby door opens. Lip licks, wary of her surroundings. Leans away and tries to avoid being touched. Not interested in treats today. Kept interaction short.
04/01/18
Lying on top of kuranda bed, body slightly tense and pupils dilated. She rolls over onto her side when spoken to and rubs her cheeks against the ground, tail tucked between legs. She allows petting along her head and body while leaning in initially, then becomes uncomfortable once my hand passes along her lower back and tenses back up. Whips head around and hisses, ears flattening. Unsure, conflicted behavior. Needs more time to adjust. Not too interested in treats at the moment.
04/02/18
Hunched over on top of kuranda bed, ears forward and body low. She begins sniffing the air as I approach, pupils dilated as her tail sways back and forth at the tip. She steps forward as I open the kennel door and leans in for petting. Allows touch along her head, leaning in with energy as her tail quivers and becomes pilo-erect. She whips her head back each time my hand passes softly along her back. Pupils remain dilated for the duration of session. Wants to get out of kennel to explore. May be showing signs of overstimulation or petting induced aggression. Not too interested in treats at the moment.
04/03/18
Steps forward as I approach, tail raised halfway and pupils dilated. She allows petting along her head and body with the bear-claw while leaning in with energy, pupils remaining dilated. Whips her head back each time the scratcher passes along her lower back, tail beginning to sway back and forth. May be showing signs of petting induced aggression. Some conflicted behavior. Ate all treats offered.
04/04/18
Standing in front of kennel, tail raised halfway and eyes wide. Ears are forward and pupils are dilated. Allows petting along head and shoulders while leaning in with energy. When petting is concentrated along her lower back she whips her head around and nips at the scratcher. Showing potential signs of petting induced aggression. Ate all treats given.
04/05/18
Comes forward as I approach and vocalizes, ears forward with pupils dilated. She allows petting along her head and body with the bear-claw while leaning in with energy and raising her tail. She vocalizes loudly whenever the scratcher passes along her lower back. Becomes uncomfortable with extended full body petting – swats and flattens ears after a few more minutes. She appreciates attention as long as you stay focused on her head. Showing possible signs of petting-induced aggression. Ate all treats given.
04/06/18
Very curious of her surroundings, comes forward to explore. She sniffs my hand and tolerates petting along her back. Tail thrashes around, pupils dilate. She managed to squeeze through and run out the kennel. Will check on her again later when she calms down.
Cage Condition:
Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:
Mia meows and approaches the front. She sits upright and looks at the assessor with soft eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Mia meows softly and reaches out with her paws.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Mia greets the assessor by the front and sniffs.
Reaction to touch:
Mia sniffs the assessor’s hand and shifts away to avoid contact. She allows petting on her head, but flips her head back and focuses on the assessor’s hand when pet along her body, meowing. She repeats this whenever pet along her body and will hiss and swipe at the assessor’s hand when her warning wasn’t heard. She grumbles and flees to her other kennel space to avoid further contact, but will come forward again when petting isn’t attempted.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Lively
VOCAL:
Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE:
Bold
Social
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Mia initially solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and swipe at the assessor’s hand. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Mia becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Mia tolerates brief attention and petting, but will give clear warning signs when she does not want attention. Her previous owner did not report this behavior, so we are unsure if this behavior will translate into a home environment. She may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
