*** SAFE 01/12/18 *** MI MAU lived with one owner for two years and got along with children and another cat. It’s not hard to understand why she’s terrified and afraid on being dumped in the shelter. This is a nice cat who deserves a furever home!

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Unable to handle.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/02/18 Crouched in front of kennel, body slightly tense and eyes alert. She tilts her ears as the cage door opens and raises her paw as I reach towards her. She bats at my hand a couple of times (claws unextended) when I attempt petting. Licks lips. Doesn’t eat treats during interaction – too focused on me at the moment. Needs more time to adjust. 01/03/18 Lying in back of kennel, body low. Leans away and hisses when approached, tail wrapping around body. She tolerates petting along her head and body while lowering herself and flattening her ears. Sniffs the treats I place down next to her but doesn’t eat them. Needs more time to adjust. 01/07/18 At front of kennel, vocalizing and leaning against kennel door as I approach. Meows become long and drawn out when I focus my attention on her and she crouches down to watch my hand as I open the kennel door. She then steps forward to swat at my hand and backs away. Tolerates petting along head briefly before flattening ears and hissing. Raises paw. May be conflicted or may be showing signs of petting induced aggression. Not too interested in treats. She has become less tolerates of touch and interaction since she’s been here. Would benefit from placement.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Mi Mau is lying in her litterbox with a low, tense body as the assessor approaches.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mi Mau avoids eye contact when spoken to and begins to whine and growl.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mi Mau flattens her ears and continues to growl, eyes focused on the cage door as it opens.
Reaction to touch:: Mi Mau steps forward to smell the assessor’s hand, then tolerates petting along her head and body while turning her head to continue to smell the assessor’s hand. She flattens her ears and hisses as the assessor’s hand passes along her lower back, tail wrapping around her body.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Mellow
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Curious,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Mi Mau has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide /her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mi Mau may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
