02/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Melrose was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finders report he did not like to be touched or held. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Quiet and watching while in carrier, explored the room, fearful of restraint and became fractious (not towards handler but seeking avenues of escape) and was vocal, bouncing, and clawing at towel and net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 2/12/17 At the front on approach, eyes dilated, back arched, whiskers straight out. Clearly very tense. Started quietly growling, lip licking, and retreating when offered treats. Occasionally came very slowly forward to look around. 2/13/17 Laying on bedding towards front. Seemed alert, eyes dilated, whiskers out. Hissed on approach. Played hesitantly when given toys, then lay down on bedding and looked around, posture softened somewhat. Became alert again when door opened. Hissed, grumbled, and tried to flee from touch. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Melrose was lying down by the front, calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Melrose becomes alert, looking at the assessor and then averting his eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Melrose becomes tense, looking around his surroundings. Reaction to touch: Melrose was hesitant of contact, backing away from the assessor’s hand. He started to grumble as the assessor extends their hand, but will slowly lean forward to sniff it. When petting is attempted, he lifts his paw. He gently pats the hand once without nails and then looks around, seeming to want to retreat. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Melrose has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Melrose tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
