KNOWN HISTORY:: Melon was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Did well for PE but once started doing medical procedures was hissing and growling. Had to be muzzled to shave ventrum.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/24/17 Lying in back of kennel with a flat body. Tolerates petting along head and body while whipping head around and hissing, ears flattened. Tail is wrapped around body. Needs more time to adjust. 10/25/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense body. Makes eye contact when spoken to and watches me unlock the kennel door intently, body tense and still. She tolerates petting along her head and body while flattening ears and hissing as she turns her head to watch the bear-claw. Eyes are wide and she lowers her body with further petting, continuing to watch the bear-claw and hiss. Eats the treats I’ve placed down after I’ve closed and locked the kennel door. Needs time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. There was a lot of dried blood on her blanket today, source unknown. Possible wound or injury might be contributing to her discomfort.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Melon was tense, wary and crouched at the front of the kennel with her tail wrapped around her body.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Melon lip licks and grumbles when the assessor talks softly to her.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Melon is tense and alert.
Reaction to touch:: Melon grumbles and leans away when the assessor extends his hand out. She flinches slightly when touched, grumbles and looks away. She slowly starts to warm up and gently leans in when rubbed on her cheeks.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Melon has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Melon tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
