05/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mayo was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Attempts to flee–no growling etc. exam in net EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Mayo was crouched in the back with her paws folded under her body and wide eyes focused on the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mayo’s ears bed flat and she hisses at the assessor with wide, dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Mayo slowly inches away with her tail tucked under her body. Reaction to touch: Mayo arches her back and becomes pilo-erect then shifts away when the assessor extends his hand out. She continues to hiss and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Mayo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Mayo is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
