07/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Hides and takes about a month to become comfortable in a new setting Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Lived with other cats and was relaxed and gentle Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and independent with a high activity level. Other notes: He doesn’t like to be held for long periods and will struggle to go inside the carrier. At home he likes to play with laser pointers and cardboard. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Difficult to remove from carrier, tolerates full exam and blood draw once out ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/26/17 Lying in litterbox with a low body, ears flattened. Tolerates petting along his head and body while turning his head to watch my hand and licking his lips. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Max was crouched at the back of the cage, hiding behind his litter box. Reaction when softly spoken to: Max lip licks and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Max is tense and wary. Reaction to touch: Max curls tight and tenses his body up when the assessor extends his hand out. He tolerates touch but he continues lip licking and remains completely immobile throughout the interaction. Reaction to being picked up: Max was very tense when picked up and tried to wiggle out of the assessor’s arms. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Max has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Max tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will dobest in an experienced, adult only home.
