Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Max was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fearful, very tense, hissing. Unable to handle awake. Sedated with Telazol ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/18/17 Hiding under bogus paper as I approach. ACS has given a kuranda bed. Body and face is tense. He growls when I speak to him and backs away as the bear-claw reaches towards him, ears flat and arm raising. Sways bear-claw out of the way, hissing. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 05/19/17 Back of the kennel. Not using his hidey spot. Tenses up and arches his back when the kennel door opens. Lip licks and growls when attempting to make contact (bear claw). Seems pretty stressed and wasn’t open to interacting. Hisses and swats when close by. 05/20/17 Eating his food near the front of the kennel, starts to grumble as I approach him. He keeps his body lowered, tail curled up at his side. Ears rotate then bend flat when I tried talking to him. Didn’t seem to interested and moved away to the back of the kennel. He lip licks and started to breathe more rapidly. Tense, arched his back and raised his paw up when attempting to make contact. Starts hissing and wouldn’t allow any handling. Sprayed feliway and left him alone. Moved his litter box under his kuranda bed so he has some privacy. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Max has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Max is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
