04/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Max was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was very quiet during intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – shy but allows all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 4/18/17 In cubby on approach, alert, eyes dilated. Stood and retreated slowly when door opened. Hissed briefly when attempted touch, then allowed and started to slightly lean into pets. Sprayed feliway. 4/23/17 Calmer today, eyes still dilated, but much softer posture. Stood and rubbed against cage furnishings when spoken to. Became alert when door opened. Hunched in place, posture stiffened, eyes became dilated. Allowed and slightly leaned into pets, otherwise held immobile. Ate treats after door closed. No vocalizing at all. Able to lure slowly forwards with treats! 4/24/17 More active today. Lots of meowing on approach. Stood when spoken to, walked around, rubbing against cage furnishings. Became alert when door opened, eyes became further dilated. Retreated to other kennel to avoid touch, continued to rub against cage furnishings. Lay down in litter box, tolerated pets, maintained stiff posture and put ears sideways. Resumed meowing and soliciting attention after door closed. 4/25/17 Initially in feral den. Briefly took a walk around the cage, lots of meowing, then went back into the den and peeked out through the holes with dilated eyes. Started hissing and growling when door opened. Wouldn’t come out for treats. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Max was inside a den, resting. Reaction when softly spoken to: Max does not respond. Reaction to cage door opening: Max becomes alert and looks out from a hole on the den. Reaction to touch: Max was hesitant and slowly shifts away to avoid contact. He allows brief touch on his head before grumbling and shifting further away into his den. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Max has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Please note that Max is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Max tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
