Hello, my name is Max. My animal id is #20513. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12-Feb-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.

Max 20513 is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult-Only determination). He tolerates brief touch, but remains uncomfortable and fearful with interaction and is not thriving in the busy care center.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: ~3 years Microchip noted on Intake? negative History : o/s Subjective: BARH. Jumped off table after being sedated and landed on head. Observed Behavior -Unable to handle for exam. Growling, lunging, trying to bite. Netted and then sedated for exam Evidence of Cruelty seen – no Evidence of Trauma seen – no Objective P = wnl R = eupneic BCS 4/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: clean adult dentition, no oral lesions noted PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: MI, 2 testicles descended MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Apparently healthy Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC Sedated with 0.15ml IM telazol-had no effect so was given an additional 0.05ml telazol IM. Was still not completely sedated. Recheck to make sure no head trauma from jumping off table Prognosis: Excellent SURGERY: ok to schedule for surgery

Blood seen in cage – neutered 2/15 S/O: BARH. Allows some petting but becomes tense and will retreat to back of cage. Observed licking neuter site. Large blood stain on bedding overnight, new bedding has few blood drops EENT: Eyes clear, no ocular or nasal discharge HL: No sneezing, normal RR/RE INTEG: Full coat, inflamed scrotum with small amount of blood oozing MS: Ambulatory x 4 UG: Neutered A: Post op bleeding and self inflicted irritation P: Placing e-collar. No addition treatment indicated. Continue to monitor while at BACC. Site may continue to ooze for 2-3 days but looks like it’s clotting appropriately

Progress exam History : o/s 2/13. 2/15 neutered, had some post op bleeding Subjective: BARH. No csvd. Eating well. Friendly and allowed petting and PE. Objective BCS 4/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted H/L: Eupneic, normal RR/RE U/G: MN, neuter site swollen with bruising, no active bleeding, very small amount of blood on bedding MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Scrotal hematoma Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC Give onsior 2mg/kg SQ SID x2d until 2/19 Prognosis: Excellent

Progress exam History : o/s 2/13. 2/15 neutered, had some post op bleeding 2/18-post op bleeding continues, started onsior. Subjective: BAR, ~5% dehydrated. Eating well. Many small pools of blood in cage. Friendly for exam. Has adverse reaction to telazol-becomes over excited and tries to flee (occurred on intake as well). Objective BCS 4/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted ORAL: Mild dental disease, adult dentition, pink gums H/L: Eupneic, normal RR/RE, NMA, Lungs clear ABD: SNP NMP, Bladder small and soft U/G: MN, neuter site swollen with severe bruising in inguinal region, actively oozing bloof from site, scrotum swollen MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Scrotal hematoma Active bleeding r/o clotting disorder Plan: Continue to monitor while at BACC D/c onsior Start simbadol 0.24mg/kg SQ SID x3d until 2/21 (first dose given) Gave LRS SQ 100ml Sedated with telazol 0.1ml IM-tried to flee and became over agitated. Put in net and used gas mask with isoflurane for maintenance. Did thorough PE and drew blood. Decided not to explore neuter site because it has a low ooze and would have clotted by now. Worried about clotting disorder which would have been made worse by an explore. Surgery report says used self ligation and 4-0 PDS PCV/TS 31%/6 CBC-nsf, anemia (25.3%) likely false due to PCV reading Chem-nsf T4 wnl Iced area-rec icing BID Rec NH placement Prognosis: Excellent

During intake Max was very tense. He began to hiss and growl. Max did not allow handling.
Basic Information:: MAx is a 3 year old Gray DSH, Owner has had Max for 3 years and is surrendering because of behavior and a residential move.
How is this cat around strangers?: Around stranger MAx is fearful and will hide.
How is this cat around children?: Max has lived with a 1 year old and mostly keeps away. Max has lunged towards the baby before and doesnt play with them.
How is this cat around other cats?: Max has not lived with other cats
How is this cat around dogs?: Max has lived with dogs and is mostly kept separate from them. Max will hiss at them.
Behavior Notes: in car rides Max is quiet.Max doesn’t not like getting baths or having his nails trimmed and will try to bite. Max will let you brush him for a few minutes and then try to get away. Max will go right into the carrier when food is placed in.

Energy level/descriptors:: high
For a New Family to Know: Max was described as independent, fearful nd quiet. Max mostly stayed hidden at home. He liked to play will ball toys. Max at both wet and dry food 3 times a day. Max is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with sand litter. Max did not have a scratching post but liked to scratch on the walls. when time for bed Max would sleep anywhere.
KNOWN HISTORY:: KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and a 1 yr. old child Behavior toward strangers: Fearful and hides Behavior toward children: Mostly keeps her distance Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Mostly keeps her distance, displays distance increasing behaviors. Bite or Scratch history: Yes, he has bitten and scratched the owner’s sister as she walked by him Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Independent, fearful and quiet with a high activity level Other notes: He doesn’t mind having his coat brushed and will go right into the carrier when food is placed in.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/13/18 Unable to handle for exam. Growling, lunging, trying to bite.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/13/18 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. Tolerates petting along head and body while avoiding eye contact and looking around the room, ears tilting. Needs more time to adjust. 02/14/18 Lying in back of kennel, body neutral and ears forward. Focused on environment – pauses to look around the room each time someone new enters, body tense and tail lowered. Steps forward for treats and I click and reward each time he approaches me, sniffs my hand or allows touch on his head. Begins to drink water shortly after eating a few treats and continue stop drink water for the remainder of the time I’m in the room. No response to petting – just drinking water. May have some kind of underlying medical condition. 02/15/18 Lying down and resting underneath the kuranda bed. His ears tilt forward and he starts to groom himself when spoken to softly. He leans forward to sniff my hand and closes his eyes when touched. His body feels a bit tense, but he accepts petting and leans forward allowing rubs on his cheeks. The end of his tail thumps and he turns his head away when he’s done interacting. Doing better, just needs a little more time. 02/19/18 Lying in front of kennel, body relaxed. Allows petting along heard and body while leaning in and head-butting my hand. relaxed today. I notice there’s dried blood along the kennel wall and on his towel. May be calm due to possible injury. Alerted medical. Allowed all petting for today’s session.

Reaction to assessor:: Max was lying down underneath his kuranda bed with his paws folded under his body.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Max’s ears tilt forward and he starts to groom himself when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Max yawns and rises up slowly.
Reaction to touch:: Max leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand and closes his eyes when touched. His body feels a bit tense, but he accepts petting and leans forward allowing rubs on his cheeks. The end of his tail thumps and he turns his head away when he’s done interacting.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Max tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
