04/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mauro was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was fearful during intake and tried to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Growling in carrier. Initially netted but then easily able to remove and restrain by scruffing. Tense but allows all handling. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Mauro is hunched at the back of his cage and looks at the assessor with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mauro continues to look at the assessor with dilated eyes. Reaction to cage door opening: Mauro remains immobile and does not respond. Reaction to touch: Mauro allows the stroke without response, then lowers his head and closes his eyes. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Mauro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Please note that Mauro is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. Mauro tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent
