SAFE 7/7/17 **Long Stay** Meet MAURA the 1 year old with the heart and curiosity of a kitten @ MACC Her Foster Mom writes: Since Maura has been in a foster home, we can tell you a bit more about her personality. Maura is very different at home than she in the Care Center; shy and retiring in the shelter, outgoing and confident at home. She sat on her blanket perch and watched me go about my daily activities, sometimes following me around from room to room. She loves to play with her Cat Dancer toy (the best toy in the world no cat can resist). She is very curious and playful, chasing and pouncing on everything, including you! She is very kitten-like, especially in the sense that she wants everything in her mouth. When you’re petting her, she thinks it’s an invitation to play, so into her mouth your hand goes (don’t let her get used to this). Slightly past kitten stage, she’s definitely an adolescent working out her wild oats, so she should settle down as she matures. And, as you can see, she is such a petite and pretty girl, a pewter and white pussywillow waiting to be plucked.
A volunteer writes: Maura is a playful little girl. As soon as you walk near her kennel she tries to engage with you. If cats had a royal name, hers should be Maura the playful. She LOVES treats. Maura is sooooo beautiful! She has such silky gray fur with little white socks, perfect attire for playtime! When you talk to Maura, she listens to every word you say. Are you looking for a forever playmate and a friend to share secrets with? Look no further then Maura. She is waiting for you at the Manhattan Animal Care Center.

Behavior:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Maura was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. Her finder was able to place her into a carrier and bring her to the care center. She had a tense and stiff body during intake, but allowed handling to be conducted.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Calm, allows handling
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
Asleep in cubby, took a while to wake up when spoken to. Lay in place when door opened, soft eyes and body. Allowed pets while eating treats, then gently pushed assess-a-hand away with paw, no claws.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Maura was calm and relaxed upon approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Maura stretches and comes to the front, but she lies down again by the back and shifts into a comfortable position.
Reaction to cage door opening: Maura remains soft and relaxed.
Reaction to touch: Maura accepts petting and appeared to appreciate rubs on her head, but she looks at the assessor’s hand when touched along her body. She allows a few more strokes before she gently pats the assessor’s hand and pushes it away from her body. When petting is attempted, she firmly places her paw on the hand and blinks softly.
Reaction to pick up: Maura tolerates pick up, but wiggles to be placed back down.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Calm, Independent
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Average
Maura interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. She may appreciate attention for a short time before she politely warns her caretaker to stop petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for cat parents with an average amount of experience. We recommend any future home with young children conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.

Lying on top of shelf, calm and relaxed. Reported to dislike long periods of petting, so did some clicker training. She loves tuna puree. Rewarded each time I pet her. She would lower her body at times and shift sideways, but always allowed me to pet her. After a few repetitions, she didn’t seem to mind being pet and allowed me to stroke her along her body. She still ducked every time I pet her on the head. Did well so far.
Very eager for tuna puree during second training. Sometimes will pat my hand with her paw gently to get some. Not as shifty for petting, but allows strokes. She doesn’t seem to mind petting, but tried to grab my hand and nipped gently to get more tuna puree. Ended training then.
