Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. Makes eye contact when spoken to, eyes wide and pupils dilated. Tolerates petting along head and body with the bear-claw while remaining very still and rapid breathing. Nervous, needs more time to adjust. Not interested in treats at the moment.
05/04/18
Seems very uncomfortable, lying low underneath her kuranda bed. Pupils dilated, tail wrapped around her body. Lip licks and turns head away when the door opens. Tolerates petting with a slow approach. Very tense, eyes dart around, and starts breathing rapidly. Left her some treats by the front of the kennel. Kept interaction short.
05/07/18
Lying beneath kuranda bed, body tense and pupils dilated. Babies are nursing. She tolerates petting along head and body while flinching and flattening her ears. Limited interaction due to stress – I don’t want to disturb her as she’s nursing and caring for kittens. I left her some treats and left her alone.
05/08/18
Lying in back of kennel, body tense as I approach. Tilts ears when spoken to, eyes wide. Nursing kittens. Tolerates petting with the bear-claw while flinching, eyes wide. I end the session before she becomes too uncomfortable and moves away from her babies. I left her some treats and left her alone.
05/09/18
Lying in back of kennel, covered by towel that’s draped over her kuranda bed. Nursing babies. She tolerates petting along her head and shoulders while flinching and turning head to watch my hand, ears tilted and pupils dilated. Nervous. I leave her some treats and leave her to nurse her babies.
05/10/18

05/12/18
Nursing babies in the back of the kennel. She lifts her head up, her body tenses up and she lip licks when approached. She flinches when touched, and looks around the kennel for an exit, but tolerates slow pets on her head. Kept interaction short and left tuna in the front of the kennel. Needs more time to adjust.
05/13/18
Lying in back of kennel, hidden beneath kuranda bed. Watches me and looks around the room as I lift towel. Eyes are wide and pupils are dilated. Flinches when touched and tolerates gentle petting while rapid breathing. Eats treats offered after I’ve closed the kennel door. Taking good care of babies.
Cage Condition:
Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:
Maroon was lying down under her kuranda bed, nursing her kittens.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Maroon’s eyes become wide and looks around at her surroundings.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Maroon continues to be alert, but she remains in place.
Reaction to touch:
Maroon leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand, but shifts away and readies her body to flee. She allows gentle petting with a slow approach, but her eyes remain wide and she appears wary of her surroundings. She tries to dart away a few times, but stayed in place and kept looking around, appears unsure.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Moderate
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Curious
Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Maroon has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Maroon tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
