*** SAFE 11/08/17 *** MARGARITA and another cat (Gimlet) were brought in when finder allowed them in her home but the next day discovered they chewed up the packages of rondenticide she had. It is unknown how much if any was consumed. They will need some follow up care. Both kitties are friendly and need homes.

Hello, my name is Margarita. My animal id is #11512. I am a desexed male orange cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Nov-2017.
Margarita is at risk due to medical. It i believed that she is suffering from rodenticide toxicity. Margarita’s care is manageable in home and there are no known behavior concerns for margarita at this time.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 3-6 years based on dentition and overall appearance Microchip noted on Intake? Scanned neg on intake History : Came in with 1 other cat. Client found these cats and let them into her house; the following morning she discovered that her Fist Strike Soft Bait rodenticide packages were torn up and chewed apart. Subjective: Alert, active in kennel Observed Behavior – Eyes dilated, looking around. Crouches to exam table. Allows all handling. Objective BAR-H, MMs pink, BCS 7/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, possible scant serous nasal discharge. Oral Exam: Mild tartar and gingivitis, no petechiae PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Male neutered MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Normal externally Assessment: 1. Rodenticide toxicity, unknown amount consumed 2. Possible early URI 3. Overweight Prognosis: Good if vitamin K is continued for a full month Plan: 1. Running CBC/chemistry in-house and sending out PT/PTT 2. Start 1.5 ml vitamin K1 SQ SID x30 days, repeat PT/PTT 48-72 hours after last treatment 3. Monitor for URI signs 4. Recommend weight loss of 1-2 lbs 1088
CBC – plt 59,000/ul. R/O machine error vs. real thrombocytopenia. All other values are unremarkable. Chemistry – all unremarkable 1088
Hx: Rodenticide toxicity. PT/PTT at Idexx. S/O: Pt BAR-H, MMs pink and moist, no petechiae or ecchymosis EENT: No discharge AU, OU, nose. H/L: Eupnic, not ausculted Abd: Soft, nonpainful M/S/I: No lesions noted Neuro: Alert and appropriate A: Rodenticide toxicity, currently stable P: Continue vit K and await PT/PTT results. 1088
Recheck in med for Hx of rodenticide toxicity S/O: BARH BCS 5/9 – MM pink, no petechiae – EENT clean/clear – H/L nsf – amb x 4, snp abd. – nsf on PE A: Rodenticide toxicity, currently stable P: CWCT
Exposure to rat bait poison prior to intake; PT/PTT pulled but has not gone to lab; on vitamin k SQ S/O -QAR, a little nervous but docile and allows handling -mm pk, sl tacky; no signs of petechia -mucoserous nasal discharge, soft sneezing -OU: mild blepharospasm -eupnic, heart/lungs WNL -soft abdomen A rat bait toxicity-appears to be doing well URI P move to medical isolation doxycycline 0.9 ml PO SID x 10 days SQF 150 ml SQ SID x 3 days cerenia 16 mg tab: 1/2 tab PO SID x 3 days

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Margarita looks at the assessor and blinks softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Margarita gets up and greets the assessor by the front.
Reaction to touch:: Margarita sniffs the assessor’s hand and head-butts her sibling. She head-butts the assessor’s hand afterwards and lifts her rear when pet along her body.
Reaction to being picked up:: Margarita remains calm and allows handling.
