BROOKLYN CENTER
Hello, my name is Marcel. My animal id is #19996. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 05-Feb-2018.
ZIP Code From: 11234
Marcel was placed at risk due to behavior concerns ;He tenses up and hisses, but tolerates slow gentle petting along his back. The end of his tail thumps and he slowly turns his head and watches as the assessor pets him along his body. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Basic Information:: Marcel was brought in as a stray by National park Services employee. No history is known at this time.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Marcel was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/06/18 Tense in back of cage. Hissing on approach.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/07/18 Lying on top of kuranda bed with a tense body, tail wrapped around feet. Flattens ears and makes eye contact when spoken to. He tolerates petting along his head and body with the bear-claw while spinning in circles with a low body and tail in an attempt to avoid contact. Begins to growl. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. 02/08/18 Perched on top the kuranda bed, watching with wide, focused eyes. He slowly turns his head away when spoken to softly. Not open to interacting. Wasn’t interested when I offered him treats. He grumbles and shifts away when he’s had enough. Seems uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Marcel was perched on top the kuranda bed, watching the assessor with wide eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Marcel’s eyes dart around the kennel and she doesn’t get up or come forward when the assessor tries coaxing him forward.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Marcel rises up slowly and lip licks.
Reaction to touch:: Marcel slowly leans away and starts to grumble when the assessor extends his hand out. He tenses up and hisses, but tolerates slow gentle petting along his back. The end of his tail thumps and he slowly turns his head and watches as the assessor pets him along his body.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Marcel has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Marcel tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
