09/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Mama was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Little tense, timid and nervous ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/31/17 Lying in litter box with tilted ears and a low body. She tolerates petting along her head and body with a tense face, body remaining still and whiskers pulled back. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Mama was hiding in her cat den. Reaction when softly spoken to: Mama keeps her body lowered and makes eye contact through the porthole. Reaction to cage door opening: Mama remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Mama’s ears bend flat, she slowly rises up and hisses when the assessor approaches him. She quickly strikes then retreats to the back of the den and doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Mama has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Mama is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
