MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
6/16/18
Observed Behavior: allows handling but tense and will hiss
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
6/16/18
Crouched position in her litter box, hisses when spoken to, sniffs the hand and flinches when touched on the head then slowly increases distance
6/18/18
Resting in cubby on approach, soft posture, dilated eyes. Meowed when spoken to, came out to main compartment, started eating offered treats. Hissed when door unlocked, started cheek rubbing cage furnishings. Head-butted, leaned and arched enthusiastically into pets, intermittent hissing.
6/19/18
Lying down in her cage cubby, soft eyes, engages the front with tail high, soft body, leans in for pets, and purrs throughout the interaction. She is however, alert with sudden noises and runs into the cage cubby, but quickly comes out and continues to solicit attention.
Cage Condition:
Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:
Mama rests in her cubby, looking at the assessor with soft posture and dilated eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Mama meows at the assessor and comes out to the main compartment.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Mama becomes alert and hisses at the assessor.
Reaction to touch:
Mama head-butts, leans, and arches into the stroke, but continues to hiss intermittently.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Moderate
VOCAL:
Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE:
Affectionate
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Initially Mama solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Mama becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Mama may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home.
We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
