Intake Behavior:
Mahine attempted to flee during intake and could not be collared or have picture taken on backdrop.
KNOWN HISTORY:
Mahine was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Allowed handling however will occasionally hiss
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
06/20/17
Sitting crouched in center of kennel, ears forward and eyes alert. Makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks away. Allows petting along head and body while vocalizing softly and raising butt in the air. Timid – warms up when interacted with. Doing well!
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor: Mahine meows loudly then comes forward to sniff the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Mahine is very vocal and constantly rubs her entire body against the cage door.
Reaction to cage door opening: Mahine is calm and relaxed.
Reaction to touch: Mahine moves away and seems a little unsure of contact. She sniffs then slowly leans in for rubs and petting along her body. She occasionally whines and focuses on the assessor’s hand when rubbed along her back, but doesn’t display any further reaction.
Reaction to being picked up: Mahine was tense when picked up, whines and wiggles out of the assessor’s arms.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
VOCAL: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: Affectionate, Calm
RECOMMENDATIONS:
No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats – Mahine remains social and easy to handle with her human caretakers, but please be aware that Mahine may be uncomfortable around other cats. Her finder reports that she got into fights with her cat at home. Mahine also hisses at neighboring cats in the shelter whenever she notices them. Due to the described behaviors, we recommend Mahine goes to a home with no other cats OR into a multi-cat home with cat parents experienced with introducing new cats slowly and gradually over a long period of time.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Average
Mahine interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents.
