ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/31/17 Crouched in front of kennel, ears forward with tail curled around feet. She backs away as the cage door opens, then steps forward to head-butt my hand, tail and body remaining low. Begins to warm up with continued petting, raising tail and making eyes contact with soft eyes. Sweet, has potential to warm up. Did well today! 01/02/18 Crouched in front of kennel, ears forward. Makes eye contact and vocalizes when spoken to. She stands up and begins head-butting the kennel door as I’m opening it, then remains in front of her kennel to allow petting. She allows touch along her head and body while leaning in and raising her tail. Vocalizes loudly each time my hand passes along her lower back. She becomes more tolerant as I begin to give her treats in between petting. Showing improvement daily. She became upset when I was petting the cat next to her and he came into her line of sight. She became fixated on him and continued to hiss until I gave her treats on the opposite side of the kennel. 01/03/18 At front of kennel, ears forward and eyes bright. She hisses as I unlock the kennel door and steps forward to sniff my hand. Gives my hand a head-butt. I give her a treat and click and reward each time she approaches me for petting, leans in or gives me head-butts. I also click and reward each time my hand passes along her back. Responds well to clicker training – food motivated. Focused on surroundings – she may back away and hiss when she hears a loud noise or become focused on cats next to her and begin to hiss if they come into her line of sight. Did well today! 01/04/18 Meows and stretches upon approach. Reaches out with paws and continues to meow, very vocal. Lowers body when door opens, but accepts petting and is slightly tense, but doesn’t mind when offered treats. May get overwhelmed with too much petting, so kept interaction to a minimum. Did well today, but needs more positive reinforcement.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Magenta meows softly and comes forward with a relaxed body to greet the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Magenta’s tail rises and she continues to vocalize as she rubs her body against the cage door.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Magenta lowers her body and becomes alert.
Reaction to touch:: Magenta seems hesitant initially, but she leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand and accepts gentle petting. She nudges the assessor, gives head butts and arches her back when rubbed, but she still feels slightly tense. After a few passes along her body she lip licks, backs away and vocalizes when pet for an extended period of time.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Affectionate,Curious,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Magenta has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Magenta tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She warms up once approached and will begin to solicit attention. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
