MacKenzie is a 7 year old girl who has some self-inflicted trauma to her ears from a bad case of ear mites. She is not thriving in the shelter and desperately needs a new home! Hello, my name is MacKenzie. My animal id is #11705. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 04-Nov-2017.
MacKenzie is being placed at risk due to behavior. She is uncomfortable in the care center and has shown distance increasing behaviors. At this time there are no known medical concerns for MacKenzie at this time.

History : stray Subjective: Observed Behavior -growls Evidence of Cruelty seen -n Evidence of Trauma seen -n Objective T = P =200 R =wnl BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, very heavy ear mite type dc, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: mod tartar PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: no SS seen MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment ear mites Prognosis:good Plan:ohe, gave ivermectin 0.12ml sq, cleaned ears SURGERY: Okay for surgery
S/O -QAR, nervous, regresses and hisses when approached but allows handling -mm pk, moist -small vomitus in cage, appears to be a candy wrapper along with small hair ball -OD: intermittent blepharospasm, slightly elevated eyelid OU -no nasal discharge or sneezing -eupnic A -Episode of vomiting-small wrapper with hair, likely due to foreign body but may be exacerbated by stress -Blepharospasm-r/o conjunctivitis vs behavioral P changed to in house for spay, re-evaluate for conjunctivitis and vomiting
Pre-spay exam S: Hissing, growling, but doesn’t duck away from handling and allows basic exam. O: BAR-H, BCS 7/9, MMs pink and moist EENT: Moderate tartar but severe gingivitis and many areas of gingival hyperplasia. AU large amount of black granular discharge deeper in canals. No discharge OU, nose. PLNs: Not significantly enlarged. H/L: NSR, NMA. Eupnic, quiet lung sounds. Abd: Soft, fat under abd so difficult to palpate. M/S/I: Amb x4. No skin lesions noted. UG: Female, possible spay scar palpated during quick palpation Neuro: Alert and appropriate, no sign neurological deficiencies A: 1. Likely ear mites 2. Dental disease, feline resorptive lesions 3. Possibly spayed 4. Overweight Short-term prognosis: Good-fair P: 1. Clean ears today during anesthesia 2. Recommend dental cleaning in the near future 3. Recommend weight loss of 1-2 lbs 4. KNOWN HISTORY:: Mackenzie was brought in as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment. However, around strangers Mackenzie is said to be friendly. She allowed her finder to pick her up and place her in a carrier.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior -growls
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/5/17 Crouched in top cubby, wide-eyed, looking around. Eyes became dilated when door opened. Retreated, flattened ears, hissed quietly when attempted touch. Sprayed thunderease. 11/6/17 Resting in top cubby, became alert when door opened. Flattened ears, eyes became dilated. Lay in place when door opened, hissed quietly. Tolerated brief pets, then lowered head and hissed again. Sprayed thunderease.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Mackenzie remains neutral, lying down in her cage cubby during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Mackenzie remains immobile in place.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Mackenzie eyes remain normal, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Mackenzie hisses and lip licks when she sees the assessor’s hand. However, she allows a brief touch, but ears draw back and she began to growl.

Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
