Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Luna was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in her previous home. She was not receptive to handling during intake and tried to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: nervous, tried to flee, hissing, swatting ENRICHMENT NOTES: 3/20/17 – In hidey den on approach, peeking out with dilated eyes. Retreated inside when door opened, moved to avoid touch. 3/26/17 – Dozing in hidey den, woke when spoken to. Became stiff when door opened. Flinched and pressed to back wall when pet. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Luna looks at the assessor with stiff posture and dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Luna continues to look at the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Luna becomes tense and begins to retreat. Reaction to touch: Luna moves to the back of her den and flinches when touched. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Luna has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY Luna tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only
