03/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lu Lu was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/01/17 Hiding in litter box, nervous and unsure. Allows touching all over but body is tense, doesn’t react much. 03/02/17 Cowering in litter box, wants to be invisible. Cage is torn apart, appears as if she may have been trying to get out during the night. Allows me to touch her, but flinches and is uncomfortable. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cat hiding under bogus paper Reaction to assessor: Lu Lu was hiding underneath her bogus paper at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Lu Lu uncovers her head to make eye contact, lip licks and doesn’t come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Lu Lu remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Lu Lu remains immobile when approached and she keeps her eyes focused on the assessor’s movements. She closes her eyes and tolerates petting with a very slow approach, starts slow blinking then turns her head away. Her body feels tense/ stiff and she doesn’t move or come forward when coaxed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back, and another if applicable VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Lu Lu has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Lu Lu tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
