Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 1 Adult Behavior toward strangers: Hides Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Lived with other cats and got along well with them Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Energy level/descriptors: Fearful MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tries to flee, hisses ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/22/17 Sitting crouched in back of kennel. Tolerates petting while flattening her ears and turning her head to watch the bear-claw, hissing with paw raised and body stiff. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Lucy was tense and hiding underneath her blanket at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Lucy doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Lucy hisses and shifts her body weight. Reaction to touch: Lucy arches her body, hisses and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. She seems very uncomfortable and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Lucy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Lucy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. She may have a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
