Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lucky was brought in without information on his behavior history or tendencies in a home environment.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/20/18 Growling, striking.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/21/18 Lying towards back of kennel with a tense body, head raised. He turns his head to smell the bear-claw as passes along his head and body, then stands up to retreat through his portal with a low body and tail. Unsure, needs more time to adjust. 02/22/18 Lying down at the front of the kennel. Very vocal and becomes reactive whenever someone walks by his kennel. Pupils dilated, growls and strikes through the cage door. Not open to interacting, kept the interaction short due to stress. 02/25/18 Crouched in front of kennel, body tense and ears forward. Makes eye contact and vocalizes when spoken to. Sniffs and paws at treats when placed in the kennel but doesn’t show interest in eating them as long as I’m watching. Backs away when I attempt petting, paw raising as vocalizations become loud and drawn out. Not ready for petting. Needs time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Lucky tenses up and starts to growl when the assessor removes the cage cover.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Lucky continues to growl and keeps his eyes focused on the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Lucky hisses, then shifts away to the back of the kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Lucky arches his body, his ears bend flat and he hisses when the assessor tries to make contact. He displays distance increasing behaviors when approached and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Lucky has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lucky is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
