BEHAVIOR:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Lucas was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was hissing when approached during intake with his ears pulled back and his eyes were dilated.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Observed Behavior – hissing/swatting
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
05/07/17
Sitting upright in back of kennel. Avoids eye contact when spoken to and watches me as I unlock the door with an alert, tense body. He lowers himself as I pet him along the head, tilting his ears and turning his head to watch my hand pass along his back. Growls. Needs more time to adjust.
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Lucas was lying down by the back, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Lucas looks at the assessor and lowers his gaze, eyes darting back and forth from me to the room.
Reaction to cage door opening: Lucas becomes stiff and alert, focusing on the door.
Reaction to touch: Lucas grumbles, but slowly shifts his head to sniff the assessor’s hand. He will look around, appearing to look for an escape, but remains motionless. He allows brief petting, but hisses and quickly shifts into his other kennel space to avoid contact and lip licks.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
– Fearful – Lucas has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
– Experienced, adult home only – Lucas tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
