Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lu was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: At first, patient allowed handling, however became very difficult and was attempting to flee and bite
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/27/17 Lying on top of kuranda bed with a low, tense body. Maintains eye contact when spoken to and tolerates petting along head and shoulders for a few moments before turning around to swat the bear-claw while hissing. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 11/28/17 Lying in litterbox, ears forward and eyes alert. She eats the treats I place by her so I clicker train her, rewarding her each time she comes forward calmly or smells my hand. Not ready for petting yet – begins to growl and grumble. I end the clicker training session when she begins to grumble and reach out towards me with claws. Needs time to adjust. Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Lu was curled up tight with her ears bend flat on top the kuranda bed. She low growls when approached and starts lip licking.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Lu lip chatters, yowls and remains focused on the assessor.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Lu rises up and hisses.
Reaction to touch:: Lu tenses up, her tail thrashes and she lunges forward when approached. She displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Lu has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Lu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
