07/08/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Loki didn’t allow any handling during the intake process. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Aggressive ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/06/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low, tense body. Tolerates petting briefly while hissing and snorting, turning head to watch the bear-claw with wide eyes. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Loki lifts his body up, lip licks and watches the assessor with wide focused eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Loki’s tail trashes and he yowls when the assessor talks softly to him. Reaction to cage door opening: Loki is alert. Reaction to touch: Loki yowls, arches her back and strikes when the assessor approaches him. He seems very stressed and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Loki has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Loki is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
