08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: During intake Little Jon was timid and didn’t allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous. Good for all medical handling. Did not hiss, strike, or try to bite. Did not need net to restrain. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense body, tail wrapped around his feet. He tolerates petting while leaning away, face becoming tense. Needs more time to adjust. 08/14/17 Sitting crouched in back of kennel, ears forward and body slightly tensed. He squints and backs away when reach forward, tail wrapped around his feet. Retreats through portal before I can touch him. He eats the treats I place next to him so I clicker train him. Click and reward each time he sniffs my hand or each time he comes forward. Retreated through portal twice during clicker training. Needs some time to adjust. 08/15/17 Hunched over at the front of the cage, tail tucked under his body. Eyes wide, focused on my movements. He backs away slowly, starts to slow blink. Unsure, looks around scanning his surroundings. He dodges my hand and shifts away when attempting to pet him. Shows interest in treats, leans forward and extends body to eat. Slowly starts to warm up; body perks up, tail rises. Needs a slow approach. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Little Jon has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Little Jon tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
