06/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Linda was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. Her previous owner reports she has lived with one adult and tends to run from people. She has lived with other cats and small animals, and seemed to get along well. She is more shy and tends to hide a lot, but she always uses her litter box. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Showing signs of fear. Laying low at back of cage, pupils dilated, hisses and tries to flee even with slow approach with towel. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/18/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body. Tolerates petting along head and body while tilting ears and leaning away, eyes wide. Needs more time to adjust. 06/19/17 Lying towards back of kennel with a low body, eyes very wide. She freezes when she notices me and maintains eye contact as I open the kennel door. She slowly goes through the portal when I reach towards her. She stays half in and half out for a while, then retreats all the way through when I pet her along her body. I open the other cage door and she repeats these steps. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Linda was lying down by the back, neutral. Reaction when softly spoken to: Linda focuses on the assessor and appears alert, but her eyes soften after a moment. Reaction to cage door opening: Linda becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Linda focuses on the assessor and gets up to retreat. She shifts away to avoid petting, but allows gentle petting along her body. She will peek out and blinks softly when eye contact is made, but will try to avoid contact whenever possible. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Curious, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Linda’s previous owner reports she is fearful of people. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Linda tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
