02/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Leonard was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reports she allowed them to handle her. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No Change Reaction to assessor: Leonard is crouched in his litter box, looking around with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Leonard looks at the assessor, eyes still dilated. Reaction to cage door opening: Leonard stiffens, but stays in place. Reaction to touch: Leonard retreats slightly, then allows pets, but remains stiff. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allowed handling but tense and nervous, did not object to any movement or restraint ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Skittish RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced cat parent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful Leonard has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Experienced Please note that Leonard is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation. Leonard tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
