07/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Langston was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Examined in net. Calm for period but then tried to bite ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/25/17 Sitting crouched in back of kennel. Tolerates petting along head and body while flattening ears and turning head to watch the bear-claw, hissing continuously. Very tense. Needs more time to adjust. 07/26/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, ears tilted. Swats at the bare-claw slowly without much force, as it reaches towards him. Not interested in treats at the moment. Limited interaction due to stress. 07/27/17 Crouched near the front of the cage, ears bent flat, tail tucked under body. He hisses when I pulled the cage cover up and quickly retreated to the back. Very stressed, not open to any interactions. He arches his back, hisses/spits and lunges forward when I extended the assessor-hand towards him. Doesn’t tolerate any handling. Not interested in treats. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Langston has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Langston is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
