*** SAFE 05/09/17 *** KIX is a cute FeLV+ long-haired lady who needs follow up medical care for her URI, dehydration, and emaciation. She seems like she would definitely appreciate a good grooming session, and appears to appreciate attention for a little while and reportedly was meowing to a member of the cat enrichment team! Kix would be happiest in an experienced kitty home where she can explore and adjust at her own pace.

05/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Kix was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Meowing, stressed and tense. Allows all handling although seems uncomfortable. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/04/17 Sitting crouched in litter box as I approach and vocalizes softly when spoken to. Tolerates petting along her head and body with flat ears while licking lips. May be uncomfortable due to medical condition/injury. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Kix was crouched on her blanket at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Kix slow blinks then lowers her head when the assessor talks softly to her. Reaction to cage door opening: Kix stress meows and curls up tight. Reaction to touch: Kix continues stress meowing and leans away when the assessor extends his hand out. She flinches when touched, has a tense body and takes a few minutes before she warms up. After spending some time with her she gently nudged my hand and leaned in when rubbed on her head and cheek. Reaction to being picked up: Kix was tense when held, started lip licking then got antsy and leaped back into the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Kix has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Kix may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
