***SAFE 04/05/17*** KIKI WAS RETURNED AND NEEDS YOU TONIGHT TO SAVE HER LIFE! During her time here at BACC, Kiki has gone from allowing no handling to seeking out brief pets and some attention! She can be timid initially and takes some extra time warming up to people and new environments, but with some understanding and the ability to adjust at her own pace, this pretty girl is sweet as can be! She would be happiest in an experienced, adult-only home who can recognize when she starts becoming over-stimulated and lets her explore at her own pace.

Growling & stress meowing when you walk by. Approaches me when I call her name. She’s a little skittish & hisses when the door opens. Moves away but comes back when spoken to softly. Curious, sniffs hand the paces back and forth. Rolls over on her side and rubs against the cage furnishings. Allows petting on head with a gentle approach. Accepts petting very briefly before getting agitated. Tail thrashes, hisses then swats (no claws). Low growls/ whines throughout entire interaction, not comfortable with a lot of attention. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Kiki has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Uncomfortable with pick up – Kiki’s previous owners reported that she doesn’t like being picked up and will scratch when attempting to do so. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him/her up, especially while s/he is still adjusting to his/her new home. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Kiki tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
